artificial intelligence known as AI is "technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities"
AI Within Education
People mostly use AI nowadays as entertainment or helping them with specific tasks 'Chat GPT' being well known for helping others either with queries or knowledge about subjects but this can be exploited. Universities and colleges now have an AI policy so if anything is written from AI it can't be counted, sometimes even earning the student s fail. AI normally doesn't have a personality/writing style so it's now easier to notice what's been written by hand. Other schools have different policies when it comes to AI but each one usually follows the rule that content created by AI cannot be used within an educational setting.
Uses Of AI
Many Content creators will use Artificial intelligence to boost their online platform, whether that be through generating comments or programing AI bots that they can 'interact' with - creating the illusion that they have great communication with their followers. Sometimes these bots are even made to create very controversial comments, attracting more people who want to voice their opinions.
AI is also frequently used for personal projects or interests. There is the ability to ask AI to 'act' as a favorite tv or film character allowing people to feel like they are having real conversations with the much loved fictional identity. It is also used by people wanting to create captions for social media posts.
Young people often like to use AI to create important messages to friends and family, sometimes for good, and sometimes in the midst of a fall out or argument. This can be problematic!
At the moment, there is a lot of use of AI within the arts community, with some artists using it to assist them in creating digital art. This can potentially be harmful to artists overall as the end result is often seen as a form of "cheating" due to the patience and time that authentic artists use to create their work.
While there are most certainly some very innocent uses of AI, it can be used to hurt people.
The Dangers Of AI
The most prevalent danger of AI comes with its usage alongside and within social media. The vast majority of young people are now using it in some form. Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook are all commonly visited by children, Teens and Young Adults.
There are constant reminders of artificial intelligence embedded within these apps, some of the content being extremely harmful to vulnerable people.
Graphic content can be created using an AI program, images depicting crimes or dangerous activities being some of the most common. Although each platform does have guidelines in place to remove graphic content, they are often not fast enough.
Some content created may not directly be dangerous or illegal but can still be disturbing to some people! AI can be used to create images of animals or human-like beings that are sometimes scary or generally disturbing, these are usually made to attract comments and conversations. When people are made aware that this is AI it is not so concerning but the danger is people often do not realise, ending up frightened or confused by the 'strange' images or videos.
Many young people do not have the correct information or resources to be able to reliably identify when someone is using AI. Fake accounts and photos are continuously used and can potentially be dangerous.
Scammers have also begun utilizing Ai, most commonly creating 'art' or 'images' and selling them as if they had been created by hand or taken with a camera. Often it is not made clear that these pieces of art have been created using artificial intelligence. This is harmful; not only to the customer who believes they are buying and authentic piece of art but also to real photographers and artists, AI generated images can be sold far cheaper and in a higher volume, meaning that people are likely to buy these instead of the 'real thing'!
What Can You Do?
As a parent or guardian it is important that you are aware of what content your child is consuming and how much of it. There are a huge amount of young people who have absolutely no parental control over the devices that they are using daily.
In most cases setting up privacy or guidance settings within social apps is really easy, there are lots of tutorials online of how to do it etc.
It is also important to have conversations with young people about the dangers of AI and educate them on trying to spot what is real and what is fake.
Answer questions in a non-judgmental way if they have any and acknowledge their concerns about using social media and online platforms.
